I'm Leonardo Cecchin
Born in northern Italy on 15 June 1996, since I was a kid I loved mechanics, taking all opportunities to build something, fix machines, or disassemble them.
About Me
"Once you stop learning, you start dying"
I am driven by my curiosity: be it in my work, my free time, my vacations, I always strive to learn something new.
I love mountains: freeride skiing, enduro mountain biking, canyoning and free climbing. I love mountains since they give me the opportunity to relax and enjoy nature without everyday concerns.
I always feel the need of doing something, be it designing and building something or doing sports, it is just not like me to laze around.
I owe a lot to being grown in a farmhouse, where I could learn craftmanship and play around with machines and tools.
Interests
Currently working on my PhD project about Nonlinear Model Predictive Control applied to hydraulic systems
Optimal Control
During past years I developed a deep interest in optimal control. I believe that it is the perfect combination of mathematics and engineering.
Industrial Implementation
“Theory without practice is empty”, as much as I love control theory, I also love its implementation: seeing it work and solve real challenges.
Management
In my professional life, I am focusing on improving my management skills, on a personal, project, and teams level.
Experience
PhD student
Corporate Research, Robert Bosch GmbH
Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (MPC) for hydraulic systems: theoretical study, implementation and testing of optimal control strategies.
Research fellow
Politecnico di Milano
Exploration and mapping for autonomous vehicles: development, implementation and experimental testing of drone control algorithms. With Professor Lorenzo Fagiano.
Group project
Smart Robots, e-Novia SPA
Development of 3D human pose estimation algorithm from RGB+Depthvideo stream. The approach used an optimization routine in order to filterdata from the sensor and provide reliable and precise output.
Consultant
Manni SRL
Design of an automatic 3-axis manipulator for polyurethane sandwich panels handling.
Consultant
Predari Vetri SPA
Design of an automatic sliding glass roof system.
Seasonal worker
Az. Agr. Carrobbio SRL
Mechanic and machinery operator.
Skills
Projects
Here some of the projects I developed in my free time, with friends, or in collaboration with local companies.
aura
‘aura’ is a lightweight ice-climbing tool that Ugo Malguzzi and I designed and manufactured. The tool is optimized in its shape and material choices to minimize weight and improve ergonomics.
The project involved 3D CAD design, manufacturing of the components, assembly and bench testing.
lc-f1
‘lc-f1’ is the first CNC mill that I built, starting from steel bars, linear rails, ball screws and few other components.
The mill is currently being used to create wood, plastic, carbon fiber, aluminum and steel parts for other projects or under commission.
lc-sla2
‘lc-sla2’ is a resin 3D printed. The printer works using directed UV light to selectively cure photosensitive resin in the desired shape.
It was manufactured starting from acrylic and aluminum profiles.
bern
‘bern’ is a quadcopter for avalanche rescue operations. The quadcopter is equipped with an ARTVA receiver, that is used to identify and localize people buried under the snow. The use of the quadcopter can be beneficial to improve the speed of the operations, potentially saving lives. The project has stopped temporarily due to lack of time.
pu-panels handler
In collaboration with Manni SRL, I designed a 3-axis manipulator to handle polyurethane sandwich panels in a warehouse.
fpv drones
I collaborated in various projects for the construction of fpv racing drones, using both carbon fiber sheets and 3D printed materials.
Travels | Photography
I love to travel, admire and learn things from all around the world. In my opinion one of the best growth opportunities we are given.
I am also passionate about photography: here some of my favourite shots.
